A jury of 50 independent North American automotive journalists evaluated each of the new cars introduced last year and chose the 2012 Hyundai Elantra as the winner. The award was announced at a news conference at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which marks Hyundai’s second win. The Hyundai Genesis was named North American Car of the Year in 2009.

“Elantra speaks to the success of our recipe of bold design and great fuel economy,” said Glen Ritchey, Jr., General Manager of Jon Hall Hyundai located in Daytona Beach, Florida.  “In a year with some truly breakthrough competitors, we are honored that the jury recognizes Elantra’s far-reaching impact on the industry.”

The jurors considered more than 50 new vehicles, before selecting the top three cars and top three trucks. The Volkswagen Passat and Ford Focus were the other car finalists.

This is the 19th year of the awards, which were inspired by the prestigious European “Car of the Year.” The jury is administered by an organizing committee and funded exclusively with dues paid by the jurors. Jurors judge the cars on a number of factors including innovation, impact on the industry, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.

HYUNDAI “FLUIDIC SCULPTURE” DESIGN

Elantra exemplifies Hyundai’s emotional “Fluidic Sculpture” design principles. “Fluidic Sculpture” considers the interplay of wind with rigid surfaces to create the illusion of constant motion. Elantra is an evolution of the design qualities found in Sonata. Along Elantra’s sides are Sonata’s flowing lines, with the addition of a strong undercut feature line starting at the front door. These lines, along with muscular wheel arches and a sleek roofline, create a memorable and spacious package. Flowing lines also lead to an aerodynamic body. The drag coefficient for the Elantra is an exceptionally low 0.28 that compares favorably to the Chevrolet Volt (0.29).

Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille and detailed swept-back headlights give Elantra a compact athletic face. The assertive stance is complimented by 15-, 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels and athletic proportions. Available fog lights and side repeater mirrors complete the distinct design. Elantra was designed at Hyundai’s North American Design Center in Irvine, Calif.

40 MPG POWERTRAIN

Elantra’s standard fuel economy is EPA-rated at 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined, with the six-speed automatic transmission or manual transmission. These figures give Elantra a highway-only driving range of up to 500 miles. Elantra’s strong EPA ratings are backed up by the highest owner satisfaction with real-world fuel economy in the compact class, according to data from J.D. Power and Associates. Under the hood, the Elantra is powered by an all-new 1.8-liter Nu four-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque (145 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque for Elantra PZEV). Thanks to advanced clean engine technology, most Elantras sold in California, Oregon and several Northeast states are certified as Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) by the EPA. The PZEV Elantra is as clean as many hybrid electric vehicles. The PZEV Elantra helps Hyundai meet its environmental commitments. Outside of these “green” states, the Elantra is available as an Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV).

Six Hyundai models, the all-new Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, Genesis, Equus, Tucson and Santa Fe, achieved the 2012 Top Safety Pick honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Top Safety Pick recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on “good” ratings in Institute tests. Winners must also have available Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.

2012 Hyundai Accent SE

Value is about more than just a price tag. While its $12,445 base MSRP puts the new Accent SE about $1500 above the also-new Nissan Versa, the Hyundai doesn’t feel or behave like a cheap car. AutoPacific, an automotive research and consulting firm, presented Hyundai with two Ideal Vehicle Awards (IVA) in the Compact Car and Large Car segments. It was the Elantra 2012 which beat out rivals such as the Ford Focus, Mazda 3 and Volkswagen Jetta in the compact contest, and the Azera beat out Toyota Avalon, Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus in the large segment. Hyundai also had three of their vehicles (Sonata, Genesis Coupe, Accent) perform well in their respective categories, and finished second overall in the Popular Brand rankings, coming in behind Chrysler. There was also good news in AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Awards with Hyundai with 3 winners (Genesis, Elantra, Sonata) in different categories, plus a win in the first ever President’s Award for All-Time Highest Satisfaction.

It’s easy to see why the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, available at Jon Hall Hyundai located in Daytona Beach, FL., is drawing such rave reviews, as it goes way above and beyond the normal great value, design and fuel efficiency that we have come to expect as standard from Hyundai.

Hyundai has grown somewhat accustomed to being showered with critical acclaim, and lauded with numerous awards in recent years, but to land two major prized within the space of 24 hours is something special even for them.

But that is exactly what happened at the end of October, and the biggest surprise of all may be that the awards were both handed out for the same vehicle; the 2012 Hyundai Veloster.

The first of the awards came courtesy of Decisive Magazine who rated the all-new Hyundai Veloster the “Urban Car of the Year.”

This is an award that has actually been months in the making, given that the panel of judges, made up of independent automotive journalists, who test drive all the vehicles that are up for the award over a period of months. The cars and trucks that are chosen for chance to win the prize are driven in a number of North American urban settings, and it’s only the best that will rise to the top to snag the coveted award.

Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America expressed his delight that Decisive Magazine had not only chosen the 2012 Veloster as the winner, but that they also recognized the unique personality of the car.

Lyndon Conrad Bell, Decisive magazine’s editor-in-chief added that the decision was made based on the hip design, value and fuel efficiency that the Veloster provides to urban drivers. The Urban Car of the Year award will be presented to Hyundai at the 16th Annual Urban Wheel Awards (UWA) on Sunday, January 8, 2012 in Detroit, Michigan.

The second award that came just 24 hours after the Urban Car of the Year was courtesy of Ruedas ESPN, a leading, US based, Spanish language automotive radio show. They honored the Veloster as the “Best New Product” during the 41st South Florida International Auto Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The award was voted upon by the editorial panel of Ruedas, who took into account all the standard features such as value, fuel efficiency and design, but with the added caveat that the car had to be appealing to the average Hispanic consumer. It has a unique third door design that allows for easier rear seat access, a 1.6L GDI Gamma engine paired with Hyundai’s first EcoShift dual-clutch transmission and some fantastic entertainment options, such as Pandora internet radio.

The new Sonata holds a lot of goodies and will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options and is expected to be priced in the range of Rs.17.5 lakhs to Rs.20 lakhs.

For the 2012 model year, all Hyundai Sonata models (including Turbo and Hybrid) get a new communication system and a large screen navigation option. Most importantly, Hyundai has improved the already class-leading fuel-economy ratings for the non-hybrid Sonata versions.

Hyundai has recalibrated the base 198-horsepower four-cylinder engine to improve its fuel economy. Now both the automatic- and manual-transmission models achieve 24/35/28 mpg city/highway/combined. That’s a 2 mpg city improvement for the automatic transmission model, which is the way most models come equipped. The new rating makes the Sonata the most fuel-efficient midsize car, according to Hyundai. The 274-hp, turbo 2.0-liter also gets a 1 mpg highway improvement; it’s now rated at 22/34/26 mpg.

All models come with a standard communication system, which Hyundai calls BlueLink. It works much the same as GM’s OnStar, offering vehicle protection and convenience and emergency features: For more information on BlueLink. The optional touch-screen navigation has been upgraded to a 7-inch high-resolution screen, which is up from 6.5 inches in 2011. Sonata Limited trims now come with a three-piece panoramic sunroof as standard equipment. A backup camera is now available on the SE trim when equipped with a navigation and sunroof option. Only Limited trims had that option in 2011.

Jon Hall Hyundai announces Elantra wins ALG Residual Value Award for thesecond year in a row!

ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data, annually recognizes automakers’ outstanding achievements in producing new vehicles that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional three-year period. Awards are given in 19 vehicle categories.

“The Elantra’s eye-catching sporty profile and upscale interior, combined with Hyundai’s increasing image of quality, earn the model its second consecutive win in the Compact Car segment,” said Raj Sundaram, ALG. “High demand and minimal incentives also help it nab the top spot.”

Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing and marketing strategies remain the key factors that affect ALG’s residual value forecasts.

Hyundai’s stylish and fuel efficient 2012 Tucson CUV secured a spot on Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Award Top 10 list. Kelley Blue Book announced the vehicles expected to best retain their value over the next five years.

“Hyundai’s year-over-year gain in average residual value of 4.5 percentage points was one of the best in the industry,” said Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting for Kelley Blue Book. “Throughout the last 18 months, Hyundai introduced redesigns that amazed and delighted the industry and car buyers. Among this year’s top 10 model winners, the Hyundai Tucson is holding its value exceedingly well, gaining more than 10 percentage points from last year with a 60-month residual value of 45.3 percent. With Hyundai’s improvements in styling and performance that result in more consumers shopping Hyundai vehicles, this brand is clearly one to watch.”

Kelley Blue Book’s annual Best Resale Value Awards recognize current and forthcoming vehicles for their projected retained value throughout the initial five-year ownership period. Since depreciation (or loss of value) is typically a car buyer’s primary expense during ownership, these awards are designed to help consumers make more informed car-buying decisions.

The Trade-In Value Guarantee is the newest addition to the Hyundai Assurance suite of programs. It eliminates concern about depreciation by giving Hyundai owners a guaranteed value for their vehicle in months 24 through 48 of ownership.

The 2012 Tucson is one of the smartest compact crossover choices available, delivering better fuel economy and range for consumers needing the utility of a CUV without sacrificing fuel efficiency. The Tucson improved fuel efficiency of up to an estimated 32 miles per gallon on the highway can be attributed to a new Active ECO System, low rolling resistance silica tires, high efficiency air conditioning and a larger capacity fuel tank. The Tucson also features safety technologies as standard equipment such as Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist.
